Hoof Casts

Hoof casts are a wonderful thing to have in the "hoof trimming toolbox" when we are pulling shoes off of your horse.

Why might we need them?

Protection

When we remove shoes off of the hoof, the bottom of the foot may be very sensitive. This casting material helps protect the horses weak hoof structures.

Comfort

When the bottom of the foot is protected, it is much more comfortable for the horse to walk and run around on its own and under the saddle.

Rehab

Protection and comfort result in proper functioning of the hoof. With casts we can grow out thin soles, protect sensitive heels, and grow a healthy foot!

General info about hoof casts

Hoof casts are not applied back-to-back, meaning during a long period of time. A lot of times while pulling shoes, if the owner is not planning on riding and/or booting the horse, I would suggest putting hoof casts on. Usually I suggest it when I see thin soles and/or sensitive heels. The material is ordinary casting material: same thing as used on humans with fractured bones. Despite its simple material, hoof casts are a life saver in

A LOT of cases! I've personally seen horses build sole within 4 weeks while in casts. Rarely do I recommend applying casts for more than 2 cycles (a cycle lasts for 4-6 weeks). The casts will wear at the bottom within 4-6 weeks, which gives the foot time to adjust to changes and grow material where we need, whether it's at the heels or the toe. The speed it will wear depends on what terrain the horse is walking on, if the horse is being ridden, how the foot is landing.
